SandSight: Automated Beach Sand Grain Size Mapping System
The Future of Coastal Environmental Analysis

Smart India Hackathon – Problem Statement 25037
Development of a low-cost camera-based automated beach sand grain size mapping system
The Unseen Challenge
Why does sand grain size matter?

Coastal Erosion
Sand type directly impacts beach resilience. Coarse grains provide better natural protection against wave energy and erosion, while fine grains are more susceptible to being washed away. Monitoring grain size is crucial for effective coastal management and for assessing the health of our shorelines.

Marine Habitats
Sand grain size is critical for the tiny organisms that form the base of the marine food web. Different grain sizes create distinct habitats for various invertebrates, which in turn support larger marine life. An accurate analysis helps conservationists understand and protect these fragile ecosystems.

Construction Quality
For building and infrastructure projects, the physical properties of sand—including its grain size, shape, and sorting—are essential for creating durable concrete and mortar. Our system provides a quick and reliable way to assess sand quality on-site, ensuring materials meet industry standards and reduce costly project delays.
The Solution: Affordable and Accurate
